I'm looking for a nice place for my family of 4 to live, not in the city but on the outskirts. I'll be taking a job downtown....so I'd say if I can be 10-15 minutes from work....I'd be good. I'd like a family friendly neighborhood with houses in the oh....around 250thousand. Anyone know the best schools? Coming to NY after living in Texas, I'm nervous about the snow...so if anyone has any advice on how to handle that, it would also be appreciated.
Since the area is use to snow, it tends to get cleared in a timely manner.
As for your commute, you can pretty much get to wherever you need to get to in about 20 minutes. So, it is a matter of what kind of community you are looking for. With that said, the best suburban districts with the shortest commute are Westhill and Jamesville-DeWitt.

I don't think $250K is going to be a big issue for a home in Syracuse, you can probably almost get the best home possible in the best suburb at that price. I think you're confusing upstate NY with the greater NY City area, down there (actually "down here" for me) $250K usually won't even get you a large condo. Good luck!
I agree, 250K will get you just about any house in the nice suburbs. What exactly are you looking for in a community? If you give some more info, we can guide you in the right direction.
Everyone on this forum is going to give you great advice but I hope you come so you can "feel" the area for yourself. I recently moved back after several years in Florida and I just bought a house in Camillus which is perfect for my family, little traffic and a slower pace. The schools are great, I love the fine arts programs which we didn't get in Florida.
You really need to see what things your family likes and the pace they want to live before you can pick a burb to live in.
You will find that your money for a house goes a lot farther in Syracuse than in Texas. However, your property taxes will be quite high. As for the snow, good luck. Get a 4 wheel drive vehicle, snow shovels, and a snow blower. And hope for the best.

Considering how the plows clear the streets/roads in timely manner, usually, there is no need to get 4 wheel drive.

While they do a great job plowing, I disagree. When I moved here I loaded my truck with sandbags and still had trouble on hills. I feel much safer with 4-wheel drive and never have to worry about getting stuck.

Don't get me wrong, if you want or feel you need 4 wheel drive, then get it. I've never had it and have been fine, for the most part. If you grew up with snow, then you are more apt to just try to leave a little bit earlier and slow down.
