With similar mileage tread?

That you cannot or should not replace them, one by one as they go bad (really would be the pits if just one blew out)?

That's right. If you can find the exact same tire as your old tires you can have the tread shaved down to match the old tires.

Correct. You have to replace all four of them at once. You could probably get by OK if the bad tire only had a couple hundred miles on it, but short of shaving some tread off the new tire, you need four new ones.

I think that's true on all cars that are AWD, but perhaps even more critical on a Subaru.

Yes or otherwise you can destroy the drivetrain.

It's only true for cars that have full time AWD, most AWD systems are partial so they do not wear out tires evenly like Subarus do. For example my BMW with XDrive is still RWD biased and only the rears are worn faster.

Some (many?) places will shave the tires. It's like a nominal fee ($45?).

Ha! It's like you predicted my future with this post. Just this past Friday this happened to me and it looks like I am replacing four tires. I feel a bit better about spending the money now though. I made a post about it earlier and then, on whim, I went out and measured them today to see if I really wanted to shave a tire and just replace one instead of four. They are at 4/32 so I am just going to replace. The tires are supposed to be 50K mile tires and I only have 30K on them so I am surprised at the wear, but reading reviews of the brand, this is a common complaint (although someone also told me AWD will "eat" tires anyway). At least I got a flat now vs. 20K miles ago.

Ignoring the tire diameter tolerance issue, you shouldn’t mix tire brands on the same axle because you get uneven braking. It can be a safety issue in the rain or snow.
