I am seeking information on Florence and other areas in SC… as I am considering it a place to live in the near future in a year or 2. We are trying to narrow and pinpoint some areas of interest to further investigate and eventually visit.
*I’ve read through older threads but wanted an idea on the area as it is currently.
For some insight, We are a married couple mid 20s, no kids. Field of work in education and healthcare. Relocating from south FL from a city size of about 95k.
We are looking for nice safe suburbs (towns are ok if they aren’t too rural), not overly crowded. Has the larger amenities and major chain stores nearby (like Walmart, Target, etc). Affordability and safety are top priority. Eventually when we have kids we want the schools in the area to be good too.
Also considering Irmo.
Would like some insight on those areas and any recommendations to look into.

The west side of Florence is a nice area. It is safe and affordable, traffic is not a major issue. Has most of the chain retail and restaurants.
You will definitely deal with more traffic in the other cities suggested above. Charleston's traffic is a nightmare due to the two rivers and the ocean preventing population growth in 360 degree directions.
I was able to take Advanced Placement classes at West Florence high school for college credit which essentially saved me an entire semester in college.

Some neighborhoods in Florence I suggest you look at are the Florence Country Club area, Windsor Forest, Grove Park, Whitehall, Kelly Farms, Traces Golf Club, Oakdale Country Club, The Cloisters, Ebenezer Chase, Vintage Place, The Country Club of SC, Hampton Pointe, and Forest Lake.
Please consider Spartanburg . . . The downtown is booming with all kinds of restaurants, cultural activities, festivals, several colleges (Wofford, Converse-fabulous arts programs, USC-Upstate), a huge library and soon a planetarium! The schools are good if you choose location carefully. We’re in the shadow of Greenville but it is a delightful, friendly small city. We’ve been here five years and have made unbelievable friendships so easily!
Great access with crossroads of I-26 and I-85 to Greenville, Charlotte, Asheville, the mountains and beaches. There is a fabulous trail system for hiking and biking. Croft State Park is nearby.
Do a little research, come for a visit! You’ll be surprised and we would love to have people in education and healthcare because we’re growing rapidly.
