This certainly looks like an ambitious plan for Aiken. I hope it works out...

Lessie Price, a member of Aiken City Council, says, "As for economicdevelopment, that would be a key component. We have not seen the businesses on the North side as we have in other parts of our community."
Almost a year ago the city bought property on Columbia Highway, on the way out of Aiken. The plan is to build a park with ball fields, an amphitheater, walking track and picnic shelters. Monday, Price and the rest of city council meet to talk about the park's master plan and what comes first.
The full park proposed in this photo would cost almost $55 million dollars. For now, city council only has $2.6 million set aside for the park. "Given the long term build out for this park, we do not have enough funds. So we're going to have to prioritize the amenities this park should bring," Price says.
Price wants the first phase to include the basics, infrastructure, a walking trail and possibly the amphitheater. Then, expand the park and its facilities as more of the $55 million price tag shows up. City officials compare building in phases to the way Citizens Park was built.
Still, Price thinks it's important for Aiken, especially the North side, to see some progress soon. "They want to see some action, because we've waited about a decade for this to occur," Price says.
Price thinks the people could be using parts of the park within a year.
