This thread focuses on and is to discuss in detail supermarkets and grocery stores within Anderson County in the State of South Carolina.

Supermarkets and grocery stores operating in Anderson County:

Aldi
Format: discount
Number of stores: one

Bi-Lo
Format: conventional
Number of stores: eight
  • Five stores have pharmacy departments.

Food Lion
Format: conventional
Number of stores: one

Ingle's
Format: conventional
Number of stores: five
  • Two stores have pharmacy departments.
  • Three stores will have fuel centers opening in July.

Publix
Format: conventional
Number of stores: two
  • Two stores have pharmacy departments.

Quality Foods
Format: conventional
Number of stores: one

Save-A-Lot (owned by Supervalu, operated by franchisees)
Format: discount
Number of stores: two

Walmart
Format: hypermarket (Walmart supercenter format stores), wholesale (Sam's Club)
Number of stores: four (three Walmart supercenter format stores, one Sam's Club)
  • Four stores have pharmacy departments.

Areas previously served by a supermarket:

Piedmont: Community Cash was the conventional supermarket in the Piedmont community proper until the late 1990's. Several independent grocers and a Piggly Wiggly filled the space. The structure burned down in the middle 2000's. Save-A-Lot, a discount grocer, opened a new store on site in the late 2000's.

Williamston: Winn Dixie store #1016 (21 Pelzer Avenue, Williamston, SC 29697-1023) was a Marketplace store that closed in 2005 when Winn Dixie exited the upstate South Carolina market. The store replaced an older store that was located on Beaverdam Road northwest of the United States 29/South Carolina 20 connector.

The town of Pelzer (Bi-Lo) and city of Belton (Ingle's) have supermarkets.

Food deserts:

A food desert is defined as an area lacking a supermarket or grocery store.

Iva/Starr: The towns of Iva and Starr are the southernmost municipalities in Anderson County. Southern Anderson County has never been served by a supermarket or drugstore chain. The nearest stores are Bi-Lo, Quality Foods and Walmart in south Anderson. Dollar General and Fred's provide some grocery items. Iva has an independent pharmacy.

Future stores:

Bi-Lo, South Carolina 81 at South Carolina 86, Piedmont (2008-01-17)

Ingle's Markets, Pearman Dairy Road, Anderson (2008-12-29)
Store #39 relocated to South Carolina 24 in the mid-1990's. The store site is #39A. This new store will receive a new store number.

Unknown, South Carolina 81 at Wren School Road, Piedmont (2005-11-28)

Yes, this is the only Food Lion remaining in operation in Anderson County.

Food Lion had another store, #2678, located at 4377 Highway 24, Anderson, SC 29626-5214. This store opened in 2007 and closed in 2012.

Default Ingle's Markets

I did mention in the original post three Ingle's Markets stores in Anderson County are adding fuel centers, opening in July:
Store #39, 4396 Highway 24, Anderson, SC 29626-5212
Store #239, 1900 North Main Street, Anderson, SC 29621-8349
Store #240, 2404 Highway 81 North, Anderson, SC 29621-2505

Store #73, 10903 Anderson Road, Piedmont, SC 29673-8202, the Powdersville location, is designated for a complete rebuild and expansion. It will have a drive through pharmacy and fuel center.

Store #16, 426 South Main Street, Belton, SC 29627-1524, has not been mentioned for improvements yet. I wonder Ingle's may improve certain aging locations without undergoing the expenses of a complete replacement or expansion. The video department is closed, which is an obvious sign a pharmacy department is going in its place. It does have room for a fuel center. One has not been confirmed yet.

Store #240 does have a video department for the time being. It is in the process of closing as a pharmacy department will be opening this fall or early next year.

Hwy 81 would be a good choice considering theres already a Walmart on Clemson Blvd, and 81 has the demographics plus the YMCA, but again thats if this is that.

What makes you think that?
"New Retail/Restaurants Thread" in the Greenville-Spartanburg Area forum had a mention Walmart is looking to open a Neighborhood Market in Anderson.

Walmart has not jumped on the bandwagon on South Carolina 24 toward Lake Hartwell or South Carolina 81 toward Hopewell yet. These areas are increasing in population and income. I think one or both of these areas can support a supercenter.

Looks like itll be the Neighborhood Market coming to Anderson! Finally some announcements, they want to open on SC 81 near Reed Road. Im excited because my family lives just 2 minutes away. Hope all plans come through for this. 81 has been booming.
Anderson may be getting its first Walmart Neighborhood Market. I wonder if a supercenter was ever under consideration.

The Shopping Center Group is selling 9.81 acres of excess land at South Carolina 86 and South Carolina 81 in Piedmont. This site is dubbed "Bi-Lo Excess Land #731".

If Bi-Lo proceeded with the store, it would have become a Super Bi-Lo. New Super Bi-Lo stores built or opened in 2007 and 2008 were numbered in the 700's; 731 is a giveaway. If it was open today, it could be store #5731.

I think Bi-Lo has abandoned plans for the store. It has not opened any new stores across upstate South Carolina in seven years when three Bi-Lo stores were replaced with Super Bi-Lo stores. It has gone through bankruptcy, acquired Winn Dixie and acquired Harvey's, Reid's and Sweetbay from Delhaize.

In regards to a new supermarket on South Carolina 81 at Wren School Road, I assume plans at that location are abandoned also.

My first choice in SC is Harris Teeter (though not all over the state). Next come Publix. Third is BI-LO. Fourth is Kroger. All the others are pretty far down my list and I will use them only for convenience sake.

Harris Teeter is a good one too....surprised they aren't more widespread in SC.

I've heard rumors Wegmans has plans to expand to Carolinas and Greenville is a top choice for their first store.
Kroger does not presently operate any stores in Anderson or across upstate South Carolina. It does operate Anderson Bakery on Sayre Street and its Southeastern Floral Center on Blakely Road in Simpsonville. It did operate two stores in Anderson: 3233 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (presently Bi-Lo #5626) and 401 East River Street (presently Anderson County Courthouse Annex).

I do not know what Kroger intends to do statewide after its successful acquisition of Harris Teeter. Neither banner is in the region. It is present in both banners in neighboring markets/regions in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. If it plans to enter Anderson and upstate South Carolina again, it will be through new stores and/or an acquisition of an established chain.

I know there is much support for Wegmans. I doubt the 83-store chain presently in Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia will to grow rapidly into North Carolina and South Carolina opening three stores a year. I guess being a step above Publix and Harris Teeter makes their stores fewer and more of a destination.

Walmart opened a Neighborhood Market on Hwy 81/Greenville Street across from the AnMed Health Campus on May 6, 2015. It is open 24 hours daily.
