It's also shocking that Sioux Falls has 740 violent crimes a year.

You have a 1 in 30 chance of being a crime victim in Sioux Falls whereas a 1 in 24 chance in Sioux City.

Well, all I can say that compared to the Sioux Falls metro area, Sioux City is a *&*&*&hole.

When I graduated from college 40 years ago, I think Sioux City was larger than Sioux Falls, or they were very similar in size. No comparison now.

Sorry. I actually drove around the S City "metro" area a few times since I"ve retired and moved back to South Dakota. I was shocked at how downtrodden it is. Sioux Falls, on the other hand has many great areas and a great downtown that is getting better all the time. Sioux city don'ts even have a "downtown."

So regardless of what the actual stats are regarding crime, you couldn't pay me to live there. Well, maybe a million dollars if I could move within a month thereafter.

Offf course. I was waiting for some guy to come bash Sioux City like the older post. Also that's your opinion man. We have really nice subbarbs like north Sioux City and honestly south Sioux isnt bad. Does Sioux Falls have a suburb that's 15,000 people or another city like le mars that's 10,000 people. Also our downtown isn't used to its full potential. I admit there are problems with vacant buildings but I assure you that our downtown is getting better. First our Orpheus theatre is WAY better than yours and probably as good or better than anything in your downtown. Second it must suck not having the hard rock casino in your downtown. Third we have historic fourth and pearl St starting to get full of business. Fourth there is more stuff like a ferris wheel and pedestrians bridge and an older market like in Omaha project underway. Also they want a new 5 sorry hotel by their convention center. They are also renovating the Badgers building and talking about renovating the warrior and Davidson building. When it comes to history and historical buildings, sioux city definitely wins because back when we were the capital of the northwest and were thought of as the next Chicagos only rival before the panic if 1893 hit, and twice the size of Sioux Falls in 1940 leaves a lot more older buildings and history than sioux Falls. For example city hall, Badgers, all of fourth street, warrior building, Woodbury county courthouse, Davidson building, Martin tower, battery building which is now hard rock, Benson building, motor Mart, frances building, insurance center, castle on a hill, masonic temple, rosehill mansion, and many more. There are some vacancies in our downtown, for instance the skywalk, which we at least have unlike Sioux Falls, is empty but the city has shown improvement to renovate the skywalk as of the whole downtown. We also have the historical municipal auditorium and Tyson events center downtown. Sioux Falls may have outpaced Sioux City, but bigger doesn't mean better in any way. The Sioux empire likes to think bigger is better when they aren't even that big. I never said Sioux City was big I just don't think Sioux City is bad. With population growth will come crime and other difficulties.

We also have an art center, childrens museum that just opened, a cinema , many nice hotels like our Howard Johnson in our skyline, and the ho chunk centre, our public library, and more. My aunt who likes and went to school in SF when asked about the downtown and if I could see it said that there wasn't much to see. Just some hospitals and banks, nothing like the skywalk or orpheum in Sioux City. Few bigger buildings too. Also has the Sioux empire had a 1.3 billion dollar expansion lien we've had with cf industries in the last couple years?

Your aunt was walking down the wrong street in the wrong city I think. Not a lot of banks/hospitals in this shot of downtown Sioux Falls.

Your downtown has a bar district. So ours has two Streets 4th and pearl filled with bars, restaurants and shops. also 4th street is on the historical places list. Also I think 4th street stretches farther and has more cool and historical building than that street. Over the last 10 years 4th Street has gotten a lot busier and pearl Street has too since its right by the hard rock. Also we have HUGE concerts like pop evil and shine down in battery park right by pearl Street. Also I have seen that picture when I type in Sioux falls downtown a hundred times like its the only thing you all have to show for downtown Streets. Maybe one or two Streets of your downtown is kind of cool but when I was there I saw mostly banks and Sanford and avera hospitals. No orpheum or skywalk abd not much historical buildings compared to Sioux City. Also with the hard rock right there, I think our downtown has as much or more nightlife. It might of not had that much over the past years, bit you should see how many people who are coming into town for concerts and the hard rock.

We shant get too caught up in all of these crime stats and ratios. If the truth be known, most crime statistics are just figures open to interpetation, and accumulated for the benefit of administrators and politicians. They are used to justify things, not necessarily fight crime. Crime stats are oftentimes "massaged", reclassified, reinterpeted, carried over, readjusted, or whatever else you can think of. Sort of like taxes, numbers are plugged in & out to obtain a desired bottom line. They coincide with elections, budget requests, manpower requests, promotions, raises or evaluations. Equate it to trying to understand a federal jobs report.

The folks that live in these places are the best barometer of safety and liveability & will generally give you the straight scoop. I'm talking the mom at a soccer game, cop on the beat, store owner, bartender, real estate agent,etc..I been down this road & both these cities are head & shoulders above many. I was lucky enuf to escape to this area after retiring from a metropolitan area bigger than South Dakota & Iowa combined....I never regret it

Oh, my God...I've spent plenty of time in Sioux City and stopped at the "Hard Luck" Casino on the way back from Iowa last week. Must have been four people in there. And absolutely "nothing" going on downtown once again. LOL.

Downtown Sioux Falls is very vital these days and growing all the time. You can't even really compare the two places. By the way, North Sioux City is in South Dakota. Not Iowa.

I'm glad you are proud of your city, but it isn't even remotely as nice as Sioux Falls in pretty much any category. Sioux Falls is consistently rated highly in many different categories. I don't think I've EVER seen Sioux City rated highly in any category. I'm ashamed that Sioux Falls has the same word in it's name as Sioux City.We may have to change our name to The Falls.

Um, within the past year we've had Paul McCartney, the Eagles, Elton John, James Taylor, Journey, on and on...that just scratches the surface. I realize Paul McCartney can't compare to pop evil and shine, but...lol....

We have a fantastic Orpheum theater..what are you talking about? We have a fantastic Washington Pavillion...and the nightlife you can't even compare. It's like comparing New York City to Hinton.

I'm glad you are proud of your city. People are scrambling to Sioux Falls exemplified by it' tremendous growth. There's no such growth in Sioux City for obvious reasons.
