ABC News’ Charles Herman reports: What’s the world coming to? The 99 Cents Only Store selling items for over a dollar?

That’s the sense we’re getting from the company after it issued a press release saying: “99¢ Only Stores, the oldest single-price point retail chain in the United States, to announce its first change to its price policy since its founding over 25 years ago.”

I hope they change their name if changing the pricing.

Oh crap, now i have to run down to the 99cents store this weekend before the price increase and stock up on my cheapo junk i buy.
If they think they were losing money before, they will lose more now raising the prices. Many very poor people shop there because it IS a bargain. Now they'll just all go back to walmart.

Same ol' same ol'. Remember that the 99 cent stores are just another incarnation of the five and dime stores, which had to raise prices or have empty shelves. I guess I'm dating myself, but I bought my first slingshots at a five and dime.

Tons of "dollar" stores charge more than a dollar for items. I have been to one, where the gift bags were 2/$3. I was, like, what the hell is this, I'm in the dollar store.

They were also selling clothes for $5, that were such crap I felt bad for the people who actually have to buy them. The sad part, you can find better on clearance at major department stores.

I have also seen a vacuum at a dollar store in NY for $60. A piece of crap vacuum , at that.

Well, i think we can agree it's mostly garbage..........but still drawn in there the odd time. Occasionally there'll be some good deals. There's Cheapo stocking stuffers/party bags, their plastic bowls/dishes are acceptable for chips/popcorn. I like their plastic wastebaskets for the bath/laundry room, paint trays, and there's always the 3 for a buck things like lighters. Like everywhere gotta swim through cr*p to get to the gold

I avoid the dollar stores since I don't need more junk, but I sure love the Christmas Tree Shop discount chain, and am constantly finding great things at Big Lots.

I am always in search of high quality stuff at ridiculously low prices. I am the kind of person that wants useful things that will last, not clutter up my house.

Well, they raised the price on some things from 0.99 to 0.9999. Actually I was surprised as some of the good stuff there.

Maybe they meant the Euro Dollar or the Canadian Dollar, since those are both worth more than ours.
