You hear it first from me-
Tired of calling A/C repairman ,I decided to buy a Vornado non oscillating pedestal fan instead, cost is $130.
A/C repair men are not coming to the phone !!
I wouldn't attempt it with air conditioner but I have used youtube and actually been delighted ( surprised too!) at how some things are really easy to attempt to fix and they work.

Our dryer went out Friday night, I took it apart in the morning and found the heating coil to be broken. I found one in stock about 1/2 hour away and had it running again by Saturday afternoon. There was only one tool required, a Phillips screwdriver. The parts were a little over a hundred, a repair service would have been that much just to diagnose the problem and quote it.
I agree though, AC is not a DIY project with the refrigerant.
My fan came,it keeps me cool,but rather short,like 3 feet .
MAY buy another one -industrial fan fit for a warehouse for the rest of the house,it comes assembled so shipping could be expensive/
Uline sells it.
Depending on your window configuration, you may want to consider running a window fan on reverse to draw the hot air from the house.
If you have windows on opposite sides of the house, you can get a pretty good breeze through the house by exhausting the hot interior air on one side and having open windows drawing cooler shaded air on the other.

Suggest Rowenta’s Turbo Silence fan: very quiet but powerful - sleep mode almost silent - for light sleepers, still moves air.
We don’t like any noises - never even need to use it on higher than light mode or in extreme situations - medium
Pricey but you won’t regret it.
Some complain about hard to re-attach front grill for cleaning - and it could rust? Not sure about that one - so we never even attached it - if no kids in the house not a big deal.
It oscillates and has remote. The only downside is bright light at night - maybe tape it? We just cover it
Not sure if they change anything - the price went up - read reviews but we have several of those for several years now. Excellent- haven’t found anything better

I now rely on fans,I have one in my front room and 3 in my living room, only when I go to the bathroom it becomes unbearable.
This reminds me of my childhood ,we dont have A/C,just fans, and we all survive/
I do drink a lot of ice water.
