Like nobody else has ever been in a hurry and occasionally made a mistake, sheesh cut the OP a little slack.
One of the contributing factors to the OP's mistake is that each store and its keypads has its own sequence of checking out, some are simple some are lengthy and some require cashier assistance and some don't. CVS and Lowe's are some of the more 'involves' ones for instance. Target and Costco will throw an extra step in over the holidays. It's all far from uniform and an occasional mistake is understandable.
I'm starting to get the impression that in CD world only OPs make mistakes, never commenters.
If your mistakes only cost you $0.99 consider yourself fortunate.
BTW:
You all tippers should be aware that
tips at a self-checkout machine might never even get to an actual employee since protections to tipped workers in the federal Fair Labor Standards Act don’t extend to machines.

OP didn't admit that this was his mistake.
He is accusing stores of stealing his money.
That's not the same.
Stopped at Taco Bell yesterday - ordered from the app on my phone, which asked if I wanted to "round up" to donate to a charity. 54 cents. Sure, why not.
