Hi everyone, my fiancé and I are thinking about maybe recloating to Savannah from Orlando. We love how beautiful it is there and the housing prices seem reasonable (Orlando is one of the highest in the country right now). We are in our mid 30s no children, I work from home, and he’s in the automotive industry. We are hoping to live the city lifestyle, i.e, walking to places and having a beautiful southern style house. We are open to anywhere really though even the islands. Just wanting to get local’s thoughts on areas to live as some of theses threads are quite old so I’m hoping the crime has changed a bit.

Thanks in advance!
Rachel

If you want the walkable city lifestyle, you would be looking at the historic district - roughly speaking from Park Ave to the river. Prices are not what I would call cheap, but I guess it depends what your budget is. The area along Bull St from Park to Victory is the Starland district. This area is up and coming, a little rough around the edges, but you can get more for your money and there are a number of shops and restaurants popping up there. For a more traditional home, look at Ardsley Park; the area around Washington Ave. There are some very pretty homes there and you get some yard. The trade off is that you aren’t really in walking distance to shops and restaurants.
We live in the historic district on the west side of Forsyth Park and love it.
On the crime front, we feel perfectly safe here. We did have a package stolen from our front steps once. And I would not wander the streets alone at 3AM - no different than any city.

Good post about the Historic District, but actually you can wander the streets at 3 AM in a good bit of Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn. I did in my younger days, and I am Mr. Paranoid about crime. The city is even safer now, many people are on the streets late, there lots of 24-hour shops, and subways run 24/7.
