Moving from Atlanta GA, considering Savannah. How is the cost of living there or is it touristy? I am 48, single, female, not looking for party central but not looking for small town either where everyone is in your business. How far is it from the beach?

Downtown Savannah's about 12 miles to Tybee Island (the closest beach). Downtown is quite touristy, but other (and more affordable) neighborhoods much less so. And yes, we have palm trees. It's not a small town, but it's no Atlanta metroplex either.

PALM TREES? See Above
TOURISTY? Very
COST OF LIVING? Average apartment rent $850 (per story in today's Savannah Morning News)
DISTANCE FROM BEACH? 20 minutes without traffic, 45-hour on weekends and holidays

At one time, the Avenue of Palms from the western end of Victory Drive to the beach, was known as the longest avenue of palms in the world. Now, time and development has changed it a good bit.

Newsboy's last picture is taken on Victory Drive. In the 1930s, those fronds rubbed on the tops of the passing cars.

If you live or work in the Historic District, you will find that there is a lot of "touristy" things to do. The rest of Savannah manages to get along just fine.

I'm sort of taken aback that someone from Atlanta would know so little about another relatively major city in the same state, especially if you're as old as you are. I can only imagine that you're not originally from the State of Georgia or that you're too lazy to do a little background reading before asking such basic questions.

If you really want palm trees, you should look in South Florida.

Scrubby palm trees exist naturally in most wooded areas south of the fall line and the tall palmettos and pindos are planted regularly in Macon and Columbus which is only 75 miles south of Atlanta... scratching head on this one.

Depends on which way you go.

According to Google:

If you go Veterans Parkway to Lynes Parkway it's 13 miles or 17 minutes.

If you go Abercorn all the way through town, it's 11 miles or 30 minutes.

Once they finish Truman Parkway, it will be considerably quicker to go that way.

Yep, 15 -20 min if you don't get stuck in traffic.
