Dog dies from saltwater poisoning days after day at the beach - Story | FOX 13 Tampa Bay

I caught this on the DOGS forum rather than local news----even though we are at our Nokomis house

Sad--
Article does not say if the owner had fresh water for dog to drink
Sounds like the effects started pretty soon but they didn't think too much of it at first
There are not many dog beaches around us--we have only been once w/friends who had 3 labs--they took their water
Don't know about the Tampa area--if there are signs warning about having fresh water

That's a pretty dumb dog, because most wouldn't touch salt water to drink. Don't take dogs to the beach in 98 degree weather.

Actually it is not a dumb dog-but perhaps a dumb owner--

Dogs will drink salt water if there is no fresh available
And a dog playing in the water can accidentally take seawater in just like humans can

We have friends with 3 Labs they take to the dog beach at Caspersen fairly often and they AWAYS take a gallon of water per dog when they go
She said that her dogs because they will play in the surf w/frisbees and balls and stuff do get salt water that way (casually off their toys) but she has also seen them taking some drinks standing in the shallows--
Try to get them not to but it happens

My wife is a vet tech and tells me this happens much more than you would think. Many owners who just "buy" dogs have no clue that salt water is bad for animals.

Not sure of the specifics but its not the dogs fault....just saying. Heck, dogs lick their butts and eat cat poop

My brother once had a German Shepard that ate live bees, he'd stand in the flower beds and catch them with his mouth.

So sad. We only have taken our dog to the dog beach twice, he didn't have any interest in the water and ended up with reverse coughing after 2nd time so we haven't gone back.

I wouldn't ever blame the dog.. dogs are dogs and they will do silly things that is not good for them. The owner(just like a parent) is the responsible one to watch and stop bad behavior once they see it. I never let our dog drink out of water puddles, definitely wouldn't want them drinking salt water(makes me feel sick if I accidentally swallow some).

I let dogs do what they do, they're dogs, they're not looking for human 'parents' - woof woof , dogs will drink out of a toilet too, why? they're dogs.

But what do I know, I'm twisted (and don't take care of dogs).
