I wonder how these parking fees downtown will effect local businesses? Is this really a good idea to not have abundant free parking downtown? Map: Downtown Sarasota parking fees | HeraldTribune.com

First you have to waste your time with 25 mph speed limit, 3 way stop signs, 4 way stop signs from dead end streets, speed bumps, speed tables, traffic slow down diverters, revenue cameras on traffic lights, drive around to find a space and then have the pleasure to pay $1.00 per hour for your efforts. I decided many years ago that I would spend my money else where. And not only downtown, I don't spend any money within the city limits.

AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL!!!
It has to hurt downtown businesses. Why make it MORE difficult to shop downtown? THe city should be bending over backwards to HELP downtown merchants in this economy.

My belief is that they built this white elephant parking garage, realized it is a failure, and now they are trying to push people to use it. It is quite empty most days & nights, even though it is free (until October).

I really think it will hurt downtown big time. It took so much work and so long for it to become vibrant like it is now. Even so, many of the small businesses struggle, and you see restaurants come and go within a year.

Some businesses will continue to thrive, but I predict others will shrivel and leave. The only reason for the meters is the revenue. I do think the parking garage was a good idea and it's beautiful. Eventually more people will get used to using it. It was definitely needed.

personally i don't care if i have to pay to park as long as I can park. how about just having the fees in place during the busy season when it's hard to park? if the fees annoy the snowbirds they will go use the parking garage and I will feed the meter and be happy to have a good spot! everyone wins

I thought the same thing! I love finding a good parking space even if I have to pay!
