I've noticed that the monthly rent for apartments in Santa Cruz is on par with Los Gatos or San Jose.
Who are these people who rent apartments there? Are they Silicon Valley workers who want to be closer to the beach?
How else can Santa Cruz support rents that high? There aren't that many high paying jobs in that area.

Yep, they commute or they are simply already wealthy, for the most part.

Well, there is a tight supply of housing in Santa Cruz. Part of that is because of UC Santa Cruz's housing shortage - so many students have had to go hunt for rooms off campus.

Oh I see. I do see tons of rentals advertising how easy it is to get to UCSC.

Do a lot of tech companies run commuter buses to Santa Cruz?

Is Silicon Valley gradually expanding to Santa Cruz? How common is it for people with tech jobs to live in Santa Cruz and commute to Silicon Valley?

Amazon Alexa office is located in Santa Cruz. Just an example.....

There are condo buildings full of vacation units and retiree units, close to the beach, too. Some SV workers have bought retirement property or condos to rent out, until they can retire and occupy those properties themselves.
