Here's an article today for what Google pays.

Google loves its engineers. So it's not much of a surprise... Photo-photo.103334 - SFGate

This is little under estimate then reality. I would say maybe 10-15% under.

If you're talking jobs that don't involve commissions, then no job is going to pay anyone over $200k here in the Valley unless:

  • you're a Director, VP or other higher-level manager
  • you're an expert in a niche-skill that is highly valued, such as network security
  • you are a senior-level engineer in subject matter that not too many people are versed in
  • you are an expert in a complicated enterprise-class application, Salesforce, Oracle, something along those lines

And entry level software engineer is still like 100k? Can't believe people complain about their salary on here. You know what mine is? About 14k. :-O

No, man, I'm just a guy who doesn't have a very good job right now. It happens. I wasted eight years of my life at a charity...I wasn't in a program or anything, I was just trying to make things work, pay bills...eventually all their nonsense got too much so I got a lot more aggressive in finding work, and got a California Guard Card (security guard license), but the job I got doesn't pay that much better. Glassdoor says that even an armed security guard in California makes around 45k maximum (so like $25/hr). There are some who make more than that, 72+ but those are specialized bodyguards and very few are making that much, apparently. I'm doing unarmed security and I make $11.25/hour right now. Which is more than I made before, at least when I get 40 hours a week out of it, which doesn't usually happen because the times when I can work is limited by public transit and the fact that I can't sleep during the day because I share a one bedroom apartment. I can't work 11 pm to 7 am for example because I wouldn't get the opportunity to sleep, and there are places in San Jose I can't get to at 7 am for a day shift that starts then (I don't actually live in San Jose anymore, I live to the south).

Ultimately I'd like to work in IT. I got a couple very encouraging interviews with one company that did that and was hiring entry level (and willing to train). They didn't require a degree in CS, and they said I was a very promising candidate in terms of my knowledge of the UNIX/Linux command line (I'm typing this in Linux; I took a course in UNIX (command line only) at De Anza College and got an A without studying), however they'd like to see somebody with Cisco CCNA. They said if I come back with that they'd pay at least $20/hour and it goes up sharply from there with experience. And they said they're pretty much always hiring for that job. But right now my life situation isn't conducive to studying. I have to fix that, and that requires an interim job that pays better than $11.25. I heard Google hires security directly now, and pays quite well, so I might check them out. I was also looking at banks, although many of their teller jobs are part time. There might be a good path from that to being a "personal banker" or whatever, though, if I decide to go that route instead of just using it to transition into IT.

Anyway you have to remember that living in Silicon Valley doesn't mean you can buy your own house. If you rent a a living room for $300/month, as I do, you're still living in the valley. I hope some day to be able to rent a condo and invite roommates and stuff. I think that would be cool. I don't plan on having kids anymore in case you're wondering. I was interested sporadically when I was younger, but the right circumstances never presented themselves. Girls don't like me back anyway; I've never been in a relationship. I would like to be, someday. I do need to get all the logistic and financial issues straightened out first ("get my [expletive deleted] together", if you will). I don't desire to try to leave the area; I grew up here and this is home. But I also don't really have financial means to leave the area anyway, even if I so wished.

That's just not true at all. I just did salary reviews for my staff and have access to current data from Radford. My staff's positions range from $220k to $260k at the upper-end of their salary ranges (and that's base salary, before cash bonuses and stock grants).

Your statement about manager's salaries is similarly ridiculous, and anyone with access to Radford data can confirm that. Take the upper-end of the manager position just below director (your claim was no one in that position could make over $200k), add in the recommended incentive bonus and annual stock grant, and you end up with a figure nearly 2x your $200k figure.

I'm pretty sure my employer isn't supplying their managers with faked higher salary data so we overpay everyone.

OK, then let's have the facts:
*what is your job title and your base salary?
*what are the job titles of your employees and their base salaries?
