If you are looking to live in a socially liberal area but without the baggage of CA, then might I suggest places like MN, MD, or upstate NY? Also, as already noted my many, Portland OR has that too.

Thanks for the feedback everybody. My top 3 choices so far.
1. Tracy
2. Portland
3. Denver
They are so close. Each with different pluses and minuses.
How do you judge? It's going to be a tough choice.

Just think I can handle rain better than cold.
Everything I read about Tracy makes me like it more and more.
Anyone have links about the kind of lifestyle in Tracy?

Sounds like you are on the right track. An engineer I work with lived in Tracy with his family and really liked it. He worked at the Livermore Labs before a major downsizing.

I have relatives with children across the bridge from Portland (Vancouver) and relatives in Denver. After visiting all of them and living in Colorado I'd pick the Portland/Vancouver area if California doesn't work out.

Your best bet will most likely be to rent a home anyway at first until your business is more stable. That way if you have to make a move you will be more flexible/liquid and not financially tied up in a place. Selling a home due to unforseen circumstances or a change of heart is very expensive. Basically you pay for the buying agent and selling agent fees (6%), plus any other transaction/loan fees, repair requirements, etc...

Remember that new places always start out as more ideal/romantic than they actually are after living there for a while. Denver or Portland have there own unique set of pros/cons just like here. And those cons can wear on you after a couple of years whether it be snow and cold or grey skies. It's a trade off. After a number of years in Colorado we decided the trade off was too much, regardless of the business opportunities, and now we are back in Monterey.

They are both great cities with a lot of ppl who prefer one over the other for various reasons. But what it really boils down to is a best fit for you and your family. Have you visited either? If so what season(s)?

For us we seemed to be split 50/50 on loving the mountains and the coast. So being that close to the Rockies sounded like an ideal spot. Plus the cost of housing is dirt cheap compared to the nicer parts of the Bay area or SoCal. I just didn't realize how much I would miss the coast until we were landlocked in the middle of the nation like that. Denver is kind of like an island of a city with no other major international city for hundreds of miles. And no coast for even further. If you really like the mountains and are ok with being out in the middle of the nation with farm land and mtns on all sides, then it might work for you. I suggest living closer to Boulder if you go that way. Broomfield, Superior, Golden and even Longmont are all nice towns. You will be closer to the mountains and outdoor activities here. But like anywhere the more desirable areas with better school districts will cost more.

The cool thing with Portland is you have the West Coast and the Cascade Mtns. both so close not the mention the Columbia River Gorge which is amazing. On top of that Mt. Rainier isn't far away either nor is Seattle for that matter.

2. portland
3. austin

Have anyone read a magazine or newspaper article on the subject?
Seems like Houston.

Houston is certainly on the upswing.

In addition to the existing TI, HPQ, etc operations there, Foxconn now have stuff there (probably due to HPQ being there).
