Often wondered this myself. I passed through Dogpatch last night on my way to a concert, and was impressed by the number of new apartment complexes that have been built since I lived in the area. Could not figure out for the life of me why somebody would pay that much to live in an area that lacks day-to-day basics like a grocery store, but then I reminded myself that I don't work in tech or make $250K a year. For them it's not seen as expensive like it is for us normal folks, so they can spend $3000+ a month on rent and still have enough change leftover for Instacart grocery delivery and dinner out every night they don't feel like cooking.

True, they end up making the housing crisis worse.

I’m not sure where I stand on that Dave.
Both sides make sense to me.
On one hand I do like the idea of affordable housing but at what cost?

I paid good hard earned money to live where I do.
I sure wouldn’t want low income housing next to my house.
Would you if you worked double shifts for years not to live like that?

Is this a housing crises or is this an economic crisis?
I mean if you build all these affordable living locations wouldn’t they be on the free market unless they were low /no income project housing tracks or tall ghetto buildings?

My family is no stranger to living in low income housing projects.
We lived in the projects in the Bronx when we first came to America.

AFAIK, downtown Berkeley has height limits. I guess those were raised to accommodate the new buildings that went in a few years ago, but this latest proposal will probably require a waiver or some other accommodation. We'll see how that plays out. The developers already have approval for 18 stories, but they want to go higher.
