"In a dramatic move that forces the oil industry to reckon with the harmful pollutants its gas-producing operations emit into Bay Area skies, air quality regulators this week ordered refineries to install special equipment to make breathing safer for nearby residents.

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s board voted 19-3 on Wednesday to require Chevron Richmond Refinery and the PBF Energy refinery in Martinez to acquire “wet gas scrubbers” to clean up hazardous particulate matter that is suspended in the air when crude oil is refined into fuels."

Flaring at the Martinez refinery Friday night

The flaring could be seen from the I-680 Freeway and Marina Vista Avenue

"Communities around the refinery in Martinez could see and hear flaring on Friday night, which often occurs when a refinery needs to burn off flammable gas due to pressure or other issues.

The flaring could be seen from the I-680 Freeway and Marina Vista Avenue.

“Flares are an essential part of a refinery’s integrated, engineered safety system. They are designed to safely manage excess combustible gasses by burning them off efficiently and effectively,” Martinez Refining Company spokesperson Brandon Matson said in a statement. “We apologize for impacting some of our neighbors and thank our employees who are safely responding to resolve the equipment issue that is causing the flaring.”

Cavear Emptor.

Bay Area Air Quality Management District should be disbanded, their buildings burned to the ground, and the land under them salted.

Why, because refineries always have our interests at heart and don't need to restrict the release of hazardous waste?

No,
they are a good idea it’s just that they run amuck and go unchecked.
Who is there to check them?

Still spending taxpayer funds on automobile "buy back" programs.

Banning gas-powered furnaces and water heaters, which are the most commonly used in the Bay Area and California by far, the cost of eventual replacement may be out-of-reach for retired people. You want them to be forced to sell their homes or freeze to death in them?

Constant mandates forced on the people as if they were kings and we are surfs.

Yeah, things like that.

so just let the refineries run amok? that doesn't make much sense. And no need to do a lot of pearl clutching over what will happen to retired people, the banning gas stove issue which I thought was stupid seems to be dead and the mandate for electric hot water heater won't go into effect until 2030, and then it would only apply to new construction or replacements.

Default Good news! We can breathe!

This is good! Refineries should NOT go unchecked. We need to BREATHE. Do you really want toxic air in your lungs? Your baby's lungs? The brain needs oxygen to thrive too.

As far as the other OT issue: the "banning of gas powered furnaces and water heaters" in 2030 which is also to improve air quality, check out the rebates!

The California State Air Research Board has decided to ban the use of gas water heaters and furnaces throughout the State of California by the year 2030 to improve air quality.

New water heaters and furnace purchases, and won't require the immediate replacement of existing appliances. People can also still repair their broken-down gas appliances, but won't be able to purchase new ones after the rules go into effect...But some rebates for home energy-efficiency and electrification projects are currently available through the Inflation Reduction Act passed by Congress last summer, and will increase significantly in 2024, according to the California Energy Commission. They include an $8,000 rebate for heat pumps that can warm and cool homes, $1,750 for heat pump water heaters and $4,000 for electrical system upgrades.
