Has become means that if you research the area's history, you'll discover it was once not synonymous with (black) crime, minorities or poverty as the original ghettos were not particularly the darker complected American people commonly refered to as 'minority'.

If you have to ask whether or not an area is safe then that means you are apprehensive about moving to or working there and just should not take the job. The last thing Oakland needs is more folks who really don't like Oakland but are only there because they can't find work or affordable places to live in San Francisco. If you ended up living or working in East Oakland you would be looking over your shoulder every five seconds not necessarily because you need to, but because you're paranoid. Stay where you are!

^^^ About the same advice I give when asked...

By the way, I'm 4th generation Oakland resident AND I live in East Oakland near Foothill Square and worked near High and MacArthur for 10 years.

I also buy all of my carpet and floor covering at Bay Area Contract Carpets just across the way from the Coliseum...

It can be a handicap when dealing with out of area people... I have never been able to sell nice used cars on Craigslist when I give them my address... always a no show...

Now, when I put the same car and ad on Craigslist and meet at my brother's Castro Valley home it sells within the first hour!!!

In full disclosure... never had anything bad happen in Oakland.... my brother and Mom both had their cars stolen in Castro Valley and Moms was just a few months back.

If someone needs to look over their shoulder and is always in fear... it's not worth it... thankfully, I don't have that problem living in East Oakland.

^^^ The strange thing is property values are increasing and homes are selling...

One would think this could not be the case if it was as bad as some say.
