Quick questions for locals - we are anticipating a potential job offer/relocation offer to SLC and wondering what the winters are actually like?

Is it a hard freeze - snow stays for weeks/months - temps stay sub freezing for many months - or maybe more like Denver where it melts and gets warm, off and on all the time?

How is commuting say 30 miles across town in winter? Obviously some days might be totally clear while others are snowed in - what's typical?

Our main question is about golf - how many months is it warm enough - and the courses are open - to play?

Thanks in advance for input!

It’s usually a snow/melt/snow situation here. Occasionally, there will be a weather pattern that keeps the snow on the ground for a bit, however.

A 30 minute commute across town? That covers all sorts of scenarios. I live in Tooele County. Normally it takes me 30 minutes to get to downtown SL via I-80. The plows are great, so barring any accidents blocking the freeway, I’m good. If you’re talking a commute from southern SL County to Davis County, that could be an entirely different scene. More likelihood of idiots causing an accident. It’s not too often it’s because of the snow, exactly. It’s the ones who don’t know how to drive in it that cause the issues.

The golf course I live by is open all year. If there’s no snow, there are people golfing. “Warm enough” is certainly subjective. Anything below 60 degrees isn’t warm enough for me to be outside for long periods of time regardless.

April - October golf season
April - September if super cold but hasn’t been like that in years.

You can ski and golf on the same day in April / May depending upon snowfall.

My husband plays golf from about March through November, provided there is no snow on the ground and it's warm enough. For him, that would be about 50 degrees.

It's possible to golf year round but you'll be golfing in 40 degree weather with hard fairways and will be restricted to non-mountain golf courses. The busy season kicks into gear late March and winds down between Halloween and Thanksgiving.

As for the commute. The city has grown insanely and commuting even without snow is a slog. But that's how it is in every relatively large city these days.

EDIT: Salt Lake City golf courses have a great season pass for $1300 per year (365 days) that allows access to seven golf courses:
Bonneville (18 holes), Rose Park (18 holes), Glendale (18 holes), Mountain Dell Canyon (18 holes), Mountain Dell Lake (18 holes), Nibley Park (9 holes), Forest Dale (9 holes)

It's not clear what your long term plans are, but if you're a golfer you might do well to consider the long term viability of golf in Utah. We're in a water crisis that seems to be only getting worse with next to nothing being done about it. Golf courses are an easy, visible target for water reduction (though probably trivial in the grand scheme of things). But will they be here in 5 years?
