There are a few people nuts enough to live in Stockton and commute to the Bay Area, but that's really only in recent years. It's pretty far out, and Stockton developed as its own city long before it started becoming an exurb location for the South Bay. Commuting to Sacramento is kind of a long haul too--it's about an hour's drive, and Sacramento isn't that much more expensive than Stockton. They have a fairly large port, plus a lot of agricultural processing and transportation business. They have a pretty good college, University of the Pacific.

Stockton is getting beat to heck by the subprime collapse, one of the worst in the country. So the job market there is likely to be a little weird.

Stockton is nothing but mexicans. It would be hard to find a job there if you aren't mexican.
