We are moving to area. I will work in Sacramento at UC Davis Med and husband at UCD in Davis. We have 2 little kids. Want to buy home in safe area with good schools with short commute for one of us and up to 30 minutes for other. Had thought of Woodland, Dixon, Davis, West Sac. Others? Suggestions? Please help...I keep reading that all there is in Sac area is gangs.

Yes, there are nothing but gangs here, sorry.

Look at Sacramento. With two professional salaries, neighborhoods like Land Park, East Sacramento, or Elmhurst shouldn't be out of your means--the one who works at UCDMC can easily bike or even walk to work, the other has a relatively short 15-20 minute commute across the causeway, although there might be a shuttle bus from UCD to UCDMC. Sacramento is geographically quite large (around 100 square miles) and there are good and bad areas. I'd suggest starting north of UCDMC itself--East Sacramento, Elmhurst, River Park, College Greens, Arden Oaks.

Woodland and Dixon are farm towns. West Sac isn't immune from gang problems, it is half farm town and half new suburb. Davis is the most expensive choice and the city pretty much revolves around college life--with requisite drunken parties.

There are parts of Sacramento that are low income with gang activity. However, Sacramento has many very lovely neighborhoods. In addition to wburg's suggestions, Sierra Oaks is also nice. It has top ranked schools and good freeway access for both commutes.

If I was in your shoes...

I would follow with Wburgs advice. I would pick East Sacramento first probably and then Land Park. I really like the areas all along Fair Oaks Blvd (North Side of the American River) for the lot size, big trees and good schools. Mostly from Howe Ave to Carmichael along the river.

I would say the areas with the least amount of gangs are the far east suburbs (Folsom, EDH, Granite Bay, Rocklin) and probably Davis (not too familiar with Davis personally, not my kind of town).

Sacramento peoples hobbies include gang bangin', producing meth and smoking meth.
