Oh, I disagree. Art and design are not the same thing. Industrial design is behind Apple's success, not art. That and market research (math and business majors), software development (computer science and programming) and planned obsolescence. That company is all business.
My kid might end up at VCU (I'm the OP) but if he wants to major in a fine art or performance art, then he's going to double major in business as well.

Design is very much art. Just because an Apple computer is not a painting doesn't mean is not art. It takes a creative artistic mind to design a beautiful computer, car, or even kitchen appliance. BTW you have to take art foundation to be a design major at VCU. You spend a year painting pictures, drawing, and taking art history even if you want to be a graphic designer.
With technology now, art has a greater appreciation in the professional world. A TON of kids attend VCU in hopes of getting their masters at the Brand Center. Pretty much EVERY graduate of the Brand Center is guaranteed a job at an Ad Agency
