Have you tried looking at your personal electronic statement on MY SSA (I think that's what it's called) to see if there is anything noted on it?

And it was. The letter stated that they had recalculated my benefit and found an error. So this payment was to correct the prior underpayments, and my new benefit amount is higher to reflect the corrected calculation.

Interesting as to the timing on this. I had requested an increase in my Fed tax withholding and this letter also acknowledged the receipt of that. With the new benefit amount, the increase in the net pay effectively paid for my increase in fed w/h. The net is about a dollar of difference.

Sweet.
