We are considering getting rid of our master bath garden tub that we never use and replacing it with either a walk in tub or a walk in shower. I was wondering if anyone has a walk in tub and if so how they like it.
From my experience of helping to bathe my mother near the end of her life, I think a walk-in shower large enough for two persons is preferred when a person could no longer bathe himself/herself.
It was not too difficult to transfer my mother from her wheel chair to a bench in the shower. Then myself or a health aide bathed her using a hand-held shower head.
During the restoration of our master bathroom after a fire DH and I chose to install a walk in tub. So far we are happy with it. I am 76; he will be 80 in June.
With a walk-in tub, you must be inside before you fill it, you have to wait till it's
empty before opening. You have water tripping on the floor and have many
nooks to clean.
Last year I had a shower built without any door and large enough for a chair if
ever necessary. Also, the shower head is out from the wall for space with a chair,
plus a handheld shower. Added safety grab bars.
My late wife was bath person. Our next to last home was ideal as the master bath had a garden (Jacuzzi) tub and a full shower. When we down sized to this house I gave into her, and had a garden tub installed. Yes I could shower in it so no big issue. After she passed I had the tub removed and a walk in shower installed. I have a nice bath chair in the shower so a I can sit down while showering. One of my better decisions.
