Is it true that all 55+ communities are exempt from paying school taxes, regardless of the state/city they are located in (and hence the lower tax bill for the residents of the said community)? This in addition to the Homestead?

Thanks

Your premise is so extreme I doubt it's true everywhere. I think this is going to vary by state and locality,

That's not true at all. In Texas, school taxes are frozen when you turn 65, and the exemption goes up by some statutory amount, but you still pay school taxes.

dont know where you live but in my state school taxes are part of the property tax. there is no separate tax. there is no exemption if you own propertyor even if you rent, the property tax is included in your rent.

I don't pay school taxes. My 55+ isn't in a school district. I do pay $101.56 for County Board of Education and Community Colleges.

The 55+ closest to mine is part in and part out of a school district. The part in the district pays school taxes, the part that isn't doesn't.

I am not aware of any other 55+ that does not pay school taxes.

Aren't your property taxes listed by amount and where it goes? So much for fire, so much for county, so much for schools. We just don't have schools getting any of the property tax.

OP here - Been looking into this since my original post. Visited a community in SC where the school taxes are exempted for the 55+ community. So I mistakenly assumed that this is the norm. Some cities "club" them together as a single property tax. Some states/cities appear to offer "Homestead" but the bottom line is, this is different from each state/county/city.

Some property isn't in a school district? That's bizarre. Every property in Texas is in a school district.

There are some retirement communities that do not have schools within their borders and do not pay school taxes. I believe that Sun City near Phoenix is in that category.
