Even in the best of relationships I know a lot of parents who wouldn't want to burden their children with that expectation.
Ouch. I'm sorry that happened to you.

My mother (not the brightest crayon in the box) announced to me in my 21st year that she was cutting me out of her will. Fine. I moved out and never went back. She's 93 this year and I wonder if she still thinks one of her daughters will be her caretaker.

It is interesting how parents treat children differently. I have a niece with two children, a boy and a girl. The boy was the golden child, bullied his sister terribly and has grown up to be a real snot of a person. The daughter was always denigrated for no real reason and made to feel inferior. She is doing better now that she is away in college but she still carries a lot of baggage from her childhood. What parents sometimes do to their children can be headshaking.
