Seriously, it may help to share what our childhoods were like. Yes, we go on but the damage lingers. My mother had only weeks to live when she told me her mother told her that she (grandma) never wanted children. My mother was 92 and carried those hurtful words to her deathbed.

I believe most of us try to be better parents regardless of good or bad childhood experiences.

I agree. If sharing makes people realize that they have plenty of company in the rough-childhoods category, that they are far from alone—good.

The painful-to-read descriptions that some have posted do NOT sound like poor-me laments. Exhorting them to be better parents is preaching to the choir.

My parents were exactly like Archie and Edith Bunker. My mother even looked like Edith. LOL
