As I've gotten older my sleep patterns have regressed. I'm emulating my grandson.
I've learned to enjoy an afternoon nap. I usually sleep for just one hour in the afternoon and I find it refreshing and relaxing. Siesta time.
Do you have similar experiences?
Although I have retired twice but now work full time, I still enjoy my little nap after work. Usually an hour or so, but it is part of my routine. My one cat enjoys it too, jumping up onto my lap in the recliner and dozing off with me.

I've also retired twice but I'm now back part time; just 20 hours per week.
That gets me home each day by noon. One important consideration for me is that it allows me to take my afternoon nap.
Very rare that I nap. Maybe once a month tops, after a long landscaping day. I stay busy and with things to do, a nap would prevent me from finishing all the tasks on my list. I average 4-5 hours of sleep each night and so far that has been suffice for me. But I'm only 48 so that may change as I get older.
Retired, so I thought, 70 yrs old this year.
I'm to bed 9:30 pm or so, toss and turn, and a few or more nights I take a 3mg Lunesta, up and down a few times to empty out and up around 7 -7:30. Take the dog out then have breakfast, tune into Fox news, work with my computer, have lunch, then go out to do yard work for a couple of hours. Given this routine I never nap

This I don't understand. Your body is telling you it's not time for sleep at 9:30 but you retire then anyway, and fight to sleep for hours or take medication.
Why not stay up another hour or two and still start your day at the same time?
I can't fall asleep easily for a nap and if I can, it is not a short cat nap but ends up being a couple of hours. Then I wake up very groggy and cannot go to sleep on time that night. I also cannot sleep on planes or in moving vehicles. Of course if I was in the sun doing physical labor or playing pickleball for a few hours, falling asleep for a nap might not be a problem.

I go to bed at that time because I feel tired, while tucked in, I start thinking/ reviewing events
past and present, I do relaxation breathing exercises, most times to no avail.
Last night I had a job to finish and was to bed shortly after10:00, 1/2 hour later, took a sleep aid,
On other occasions, I have stayed up an hour or more with same results, and at other times
I fall right to sleep.
