Iowa is listed in the top 10. Having lived there, I understand the conclusion. Crime and drug abuse are negligible compared to most states. The economy is good. You can leave your doors unlocked. Income and wealth are generally better than most of the South and Sunbelt at a similar cost of living.
I don't know what value you put on climate and weather, but Iowa is one severe place.
You can say that again. A hot, humid summer to rival Georgia's, and a cold, snowy winter as cold as Idaho. No thank you. Lived there through 2 winters, bagged it. Sold that house. Not going to live there again!
A nice place to visit in spring and fall. The Amana colonies are nice, or were last time I was there. You can order up some excellent custom made furniture there, at an attractive price, considering the quality.
I'd like to see a list of "Best Places to Retire for People Who Can Afford to Live Anywhere". I imagine it would be quite different. These lists always seem to assume low retirement incomes, hence the accent on affordability. I once Googled "Florida Bugs" . Never again.
Great topic!
Central Park East penthouse with a park view would work.
La Jolla within a few blocks of the beach would be OK.
Aspen walkable to the lift makes my list.
Like everybody else, reality set in and I picked a place I could afford that was in my comfort zone. We all have different criteria.
I like these lists, it's something to think about & I enjoy the flaming of Florida - I lived there for less than a year & made a break for the border as soon as I could!
The main problem as I see it with this list is that the ranking of a state is pretty useless, it would have to be by city/town/county to be meaningful in any way. Moving to Iowa City to retire is completely different than moving to Fort Dodge, moving to Boulder is different than retiring to Colorado Springs.
For now, I'll stay in Texas. Even if it was 14 (!!) degrees this morning. Not having to get out at 0600 and go to work is SUCH a blessing. This retirement is pretty good...
I would consider spending summers in Santa Fe if I outlive my husband. So nice there.
FL is one of the last places I'd want to retire. It's too hot, most of the state is butt ugly and it's loaded with some of the dumbest people in the country. I went to college in FL and I don't understand why people like it. Different strokes... I guess.
Maybe it should have been "Most stereotypical place to spend your golden years".
I do not care for Florida, my wife does not like Florida.
We settled in the oldest state with the highest percentage of retirees. We are pretty happy here
