This! And, in my experience, they refuse to take you off their mailing list, or perhaps I am renewing my supposed interest in ways I am not aware of.

I didn't read beyond this post

The reality is that both programs are going to have to be adjusted. Politicians from all points on the compass have been saying that for decades.

You can politicize it if you wish but that's the long and short of it.

When the last major overhaul of the Social Security system happened 35 years ago the same gloom and doom was heard. Those reforms were adopted by a Republican President and Democrat Congress.

I love AARP. If lobbying to support Social Security and Medicare is wrong, I don't want to be right.

They are looking out for seniors and their needs and interests. I've been a member since I turned 50 and I take advantage of many of their programs. Their newsletter and magazine are very informative and have saved us a lot of time and money by bringing important information to us in two quick and easy to read sources. The discounts have saved us a LOT of money over the years.

They aren't an insurance company. They affiliate with The Hartford, a reputable insurance company, which gives AARP members a small discount on their policies. We have some of our policies with them.

I think some people on this site have been drinking some really weird Kool-Aid.

i am a member for the discounts but i would buy nothing they offer -ever . it seems to be the gist of their existence-selling products .
Well Mathjak,

At least you are honest about it (for the discounts I mean)

Screw politics.

The only reason I joined AARP is because I get much less expensive cell phone service if I'm a member.

I joined once, and we never saw any benefit. The hotel rates weren't any cheaper, which is the main reason we joined.
