The main casino areas downtown aren't doing that great but it improves the further you move away from Virginia Street.

As far as the wind in the area, I felt the worst areas were Somersett, parts of SW Reno, the 80 corridor going east and Washoe Valley. A little less in the Double Diamond and Hidden Valley. Less still in northern Sparks and Spanish Springs.
Agree. DH was staying downtown (for a work thing) and it was horrendous.

But some of the surrounding areas are quite nice.

Reno suffered during the recession and had a lot of building vacancies and unfinished projects but so did other areas. I always thought it was a mistake for the owners of the old Park Lane mall where Gottshalks was located not to sell the property to Max Baer Jr. when he wanted to build a casino there, instead it just became an eyesore. But the good news is it looks like they are going to build housing there. A Look Inside the Park Lane Mall Development: It's Actually Happ - KTVN Channel 2 - Reno Tahoe Sparks News, Weather, Video I don't see any more blight on Virginia Street than I do in dozens of other cities.

When I lived in Reno I always thought that the city should have tougher code enforcement laws so that they could have done something with Kings Inn Casino but I guess even that is finally being rehabbed into apartments.

And this project looks promising http://www.rgj.com/story/news/2016/0...reno/87083612/

So, there will be more over-priced apartments in the area, that's fantastic. Granted, it will look better than the vacant lot that is there. Unless that area around the old mall gets cleaned up, there will be a lot of the same problems.

We've been here a couple years now. First, there is a little snow. Second, there are seasons, it's wonderful! Third, it's a nice place to live. Really.

It sucks. Depending on how much money you have will make all the difference. Huge disparity between the very rich and the very poor. I personally experienced anti-semitism. I couldn’t find a doctor that was taking new patients I had no medical care. I couldn’t find a job and I have a bachelors degree. They hate Californians and blame them for all of the the problems. There are parts of town that due to going there and not knowing better are hugely seedy and dangerous. There’s a lack of culture, meaning minorities stay in their parts of town and the white well off folks stay in theirs, supping micro brewed beers and eating fine cheese. I came from a city that was more of a melting pot meaning we’re all mixed together and Reno still seems to be in the stages of accepting affirmative action into its culture. Most places I’ve gone for social service issues, a doctors office and such have done unethical things that would be a huge deal elsewhere. In Reno dysfunction seems to be the norm. Local government is crooked and has a gangster mentality. There’s lots of scandals at city hall. And the trickle down effect is felt all over the place.

Do you have special conditions that require particular specialists or do you have insurance?

I found plenty of primary doctors taking new patients.

Yeah, I did some quick research of the area through my insurance company and found a lot of doctors accepting new patients and that included specialists.

You obviously decided that you felt so strongly about this, your first and only post so far was to come here and state everything you found wrong with Reno. Too bad you don't like it, many of us have not had these experiences. Good luck in moving to your next home.
