Keep lookin', Reno doesn't have what you're looking for, unless you want to revisit a suburban Midwest lifestyle.

You're likely to encounter white males/females with minimal education in blue collar careers. Most males are in construction, females in health care and the casino industry. Most college students leave after graduation (degree depending) or they slink back into their ho-hum lives and wait tables after they realize their degree doesn't take them anywhere.

Reno is an interesting place, quite polarizing. If you find something that you like you tend to overlook the mountain of sadness that seems to live there. If you don't find something? Well, that mountain is going to fall on top of you.

Good luck.

Well it looks like I didn't get the job so I won't be moving to Reno. Thanks for all your advice. Keep it real over there

I don't know about the single scene for 30 year olds but the bar scene is fun! We have lots of pub crawls throughout the year and thousands of people go. I think you'd fit in a lot better in Reno than Carson...you just need to find the good places to meet people! You say you like pubs, so I would recommend trying out the trivia night at Ceol.

I'm a nightlife guru and it's rare to find a big crowd of 30-somethings unless they're visiting from the Bay (San Fran, San Jose, Oakland). It started getting better in 2005 but then the Recession killed the buzz.

Few 30-somethings move to Reno to build their career, they go to larger markets. But that's not to say you won't meet a hot 20-something, but don't expect them to be ambitious pre-yuppies. Likely, they're waitresses, baristas, bartenders, stylists, etc. There are single 30-somethings, but hard to find. You can try dating sites, but I hate them, and women post old photos. I'd visit here first and go down to Imperial and Brew Bros and check out the chick scene. Also, wear plaid and grow a beard, bc we're all wannabe hipsters here.
thank you for the caution about this issue. for small to medium sized markets, this is an ever increasing "problem," as 25-40 year olds migrate to larger markets in this economy.

however, this may be short sighted since business start up costs, housing, no state income tax, and the cost of living are all LESS in small to medium sized markets such as reno, albuquerque, boise, etc.

I lived in vegas and left in tears. you'd have to pay me a million dollars to return to that place !

you say that it got better before the housing crash - do you see the situation getting better in 2012 - or is it the same ???

from what you describe, reno sounds like medford-ashland, oregon ... bend, oregon ... eugene, oregon ... flagstaff, arizona ... santa cruz, ca ....

when the economy comes back (as it always does in nevada), then there will be more white collar positions including high tech jobs in nevada

Er, you ever been to Santa Cruz? My wife and her family have lived there for decades, I've spent a lot of time there over the last 20 or so years.. IMO Nothing like Reno at all, not even close.

+1 on that not being SC. Can't comment on the other places mentioned, but from what I hear they all sound about the same speed.

You're certainly more optimistic than most about the economy, especially pertaining to the white collar/tech sector.

There are several businesses hiring programmers, engineers and the like.. at least according to careerbuilder.com. Much of it seems entry level though. Maybe that's due to lack of experienced people.. perhaps they all leave?

I'll be bringing my job with me when we move out there (assuming BofA approves the short sale we're trying to purchase) however I like to keep up with the job market anyway just in case.

I am sorry for the poor explanation .... what I means is that the "mountain of sadness" in Reno sounds very similar to other places in the western US with double digit unemployment - including santa cruz and also bend, medford, ashland, etc. I was responding to this post from "SixDemonBag" -

as for telecommuting, I meant folks who work in san francisco or silicon valley, and move up to reno - tahoe for their businesses, and work from their home computers

the trend of 18-40 year olds leaving medium sized markets will reverse due to the high cost of living (especially housing) on the coasts. medium sized markets who provide incentives for business, plus, who have a low cost of living, will retain 18-40 year olds.

reno has a low cost of living and housing but such is not the case in its medium sized competitors nearby such as bend, medford, santa cruz, santa rosa-petaluma, san luis obispo, etc. etc.

Ah, that explains it. Thanks for the clarification.. I hadn't realized the unemployment situation was that bad.. my family out there all have jobs.
