Since we have recently been discussing the Mormons I found it interesting that a movie is coming out in June regarding the 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre. It is called "September Dawn" and will star Jon Voight. I don't know how "truthful" this Hollywood production will be but it is timely considering the recent documentary and our discussion. . .

If anyone is interested there is also a book that was published several years ago by Jon Kraukauer about this. It is called "Under the Banner of Heaven." Might be interesting reading before the movie comes out for those so inclinded. . .

You and that book again.
That movie looks absolutely awful. For anyone who is truly interested in what the Real truth is please don't rely on some anti book or movie that will skew and twist the facts. This is not truth. This is Hollywood fabrications.

I found it very interesting in the "documentary" on PBS how that Massacre was handled. It also concerns me that approximately ten minutes was spent on the discussion about the massacre of those people, and the massacres, plural, that the Latter-day Saints endured time and again were casually and quickly mentioned. I'm not saying that the Meadows Massacre was not a horrible, terrible event by any means. I'm also not saying that it didn't happen. I am saying that we need to be careful to find the facts for our own selves.

I think you are a sincere and earnest person and I respect your point of view. I will and I hope we all can remain respectful when we discuss these touchy topics.

Same to you spunky. I am more than willing to discuss differing POV's on touchy subjects. My only hope is that people are sincerely about wanting to know the truth of things they may know very little of. I just strongly disagree on your choice of book to learn about this. If someone earnestly wants to learn about something they need to go to a source that will give them truth.

And just what is the point of discussing this so-called touchy subject? People were murdered, the probable leader was caught and executed, and others escaped justice. What else do you want to discuss?

Is it worthy of discussion because Mormon settlers were involved? If it is, then we also need to discuss the Inquisition, the Crusades, the Haun's Mill Massacre, the Mormon Extermination Order, and the Mob killings of Joseph Smith and his brother, just to be fair.

I agree....it's disturbing that these events occurred in the United States of America, a country founded on freedom of religion. Which, incidently, is a right guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States. Somehow, this right did not apply to the American Latter-day Saints in that time period. A lot of people will say that the government turned against the Saints due to polygamy, but the persecutions occurred before that, a fact well documented.

What events occured? Do you mean the massacre. Yes, I would say that is disturbing. The LDS were not persecuted, they were only expected to abide by the law like any other US citizen. Surely your not condoning what happened???

The LDS were not persecuted!?

No noone is condoning these latter day saints behavior. Heaven help them for what they did. And even more so for the man who gave the order. Yes these Missourians were mostly trying to help them. But you also need to understand that many of these Missourians had been part of the Haun's Mill Massacre and were taunting the LDS. Now that's not an excuse at all I'm just trying to provide you with more perspective.
