Religious people love to tell Atheists that if it weren't for religion society would crumble. This study, in the Journal of Religion and Society, found otherwise: Journal of Religion and Society (http://moses.creighton.edu/JRS/2005/2005-11.html - broken link)

Freedom of religion is good. Sure, a lot of gullible people end up believing in bull, but it's their choice - it makes them happy. I'm a life-long atheist, but atheism doesn't and shouldn't win by default just because it is rational, it needs to learn to persuade people. The only alternative to free competition of ideas is force, and I won't stand for that!

Besides, some people out there... if convince them there's no God, the next thing you know is you wake up in a hospital and your car and wallet are gone...

Most important of all: atheists are not always rational, they most often just replace one set of irrational beliefs with another, and politicians love to manipulate people with shallow ideological roots into doing whatever they want. In fact, in this country, it's the religious people who seem to be acting most rationally, not falling for politically-driven "global warming" hysteria for example, making more rational economic and family-related decisions, and so on.

Those charts at the end are shocking. Are people in the United States really that much further behind the times?

No one said that we should ban religion. It's just an interesting article. It shows that the most religious societies are not the best. I really don't think it is rational to base your beliefs off of a 2000 year old book. A lot of the social policies that religious people champion came right out of that book. I don't think I need to tell you what those policies are, and I dont think that they are helping our society. They are merely enforcing their beliefs on others without making them join their religion.

Yes, unfortunately the United States as a whole is quite prudish.

The goal of Christianity is not to make society like us. It's to glorify God and save mens' souls.

We should be doing good, charitable works, and I don't want to be intentionally offensive...but fact of the matter is, it offends most people to tell them that God doesn't love the way they live.
