I think it depends on the specific type of church. The churches I grew up in were openly suspicious of "secular entanglements" and really expected the community to join them, not the inverse. God was the answer to everything, and to access god you had to join our group. You could not hope to solve the world's problems by secular methods. We seriously thought that getting right with god was the only real and lasting solution to ANY human problem. And of course we had our own ideas about what getting right with god involved / meant.
