"Covenant Eyes is part of a broader but lesser known spectrum of apps known as "shameware," used by religious groups and parents to, yes, shame people into dropping porn habits and other "immoral" activity."
George Orwell told better prophecies than any in the bible it seems.

That's interesting.
When I was living in Colorado Springs there was this one highway I would travel at least once a week, and as I went down this hill there was this huge billboard put up by some church (Colorado Springs in noted for its conservative-right wing churches) that claimed a particular percent of christian men frequently seek out porn sites on the internet. I wasn't too sure that was a good ad campaign for christianity. however.
Wow this is a new one to me. It looks like in theory people "voluntariliy" install this shameware, but if you're in one of these shepherding movement churches that has this panopticon approach to Christianity, you would fall under suspicion if you don't. You would either submit to surveillance or leave.
And I'd bet my wife and firstborn that if someone investigated, we'd find that some people are tricked into installing it with social engineering techniques, too. In those kinds of churches it's all about control and power. Tends to attract pervy types too. I know, my late / prior wife attended such a church for a time. She left when they started getting nosy about her sex life with her then-husband.
I have to laugh at spam I get every once in awhile with words to this effect:
"I'll be direct. I have compromised your computer and I know that you are addicted to porn. I have recorded all the sites you've been to and I will share this activity with your spouse and children if you do not send me $1,500 in bitcoin by 5pm tonight".
Only problem is I don't watch porn and often open these emails hours after the deadline, lol.
But I'm sure they terrorize people who actually DO watch porn. And so I can imagine "shameware" being quite effective as well.

My guess is their god does not talk to Southern Baptists, because apparently he knows everything. They could just ask.

That is truth. 1984 is all coming true. So he was a little off on the year, big deal. I can't believe this shameware thing, do they really think this is going to magically change a porn addict?

These kinds of people, in or out of church, are all about power and control. They aren't interested in curing addiction, just repressing it and maximizing its suffering thereby.
Though my household does not partake, who decided watching pornography was a bad thing? Is it an act between consenting adults?
As I understand it, the arguments against it include that it is addictive, tends to promote objectification, and leads to unrealistic expectations or naive ideas about real-world sex. I don't think those are entirely without merit. Then there is just the general religious pearl clutching around any form of unapproved sex or sexual expression or experience.
But the idea of authoritarian, top-down control of any behavior is, as others have pointed out, very Orwellian, and tends to argue for the promoters of such ideas being fascistic.

It's not spyware if they willingly allow for it. If you think that's bad, you should spend some time around the Amish and conservative Mennonites in central Illinois. When I worked in a factory there I couldn't even take my smart phone onto the premises.

Yup and because they get all the links to the porn site you just know they have to check them out.
