How admirable is up to you. Of course you look at it differently than I do. I look at happened and you look at how can I say this to stop religion.
No, you look at it as to how you can automatically in a Pavlovian matter counter anything that certain posters say. I'm one of those posters. To you it is about a personal battle against other posters.

I am disgusted to hear this, disgusted that these attitudes not only are thought, but are spoken. Have we not gone beyond that?

It’s a shame you’re unwilling to actually talk about context. You’ve been taught the difference berween Biblical Christianity and Chattel slavery and you continue to play this game.

I notice that those feebly bleating "But! But! Context!" in an attempt to excuse this racist drivel can't be bothered to actually articulate what the excusing context happens to be.

Why?

Because they (the 'they' being both Christian fundamentalists and non-Christian fluffers of theism) have no idea what that context it is. They just automatically defend racist Christians because defending any and all Christians is their jam. The 'context' (of which, again, they are completely clueless and so could not possibly know if it is somehow mitigating) is irrelevant.

So here's the context:

Duval County in Florida is considering changing the name of Robert E. Lee High School on the basis that someone whose claim to fame is fighting on behalf of a country that was explicitly founded to perpetuate slavery should not be honored with the name of a public school. The school board held a public meeting to discuss that possibility. Testimony from one slavery apologist included this:
"One of them mentioned Christianity, and that, you know, if you’re Christians, you shouldn’t stand for this. Well, that’s awfully funny that you want to bring up Christianity when it says in the Bible Jesus himself never condemned slavery. In fact, He said 'Slaves have an obligation… to obey their master.' So if you’re going to throw around Christianity, say both sides."

There's your context. Someone opposed to honor the defender of slavery invoked Christian principles as a reason to stop honoring the defender of slavery, and someone else who supporting honoring the defender of slavery then stated - correctly - that in the Bible Jesus not only does not condemn slavery but admonishes slaves to obey their owners.

That.
Is.
The.
Context.

If you can't bring yourself to condemn this disgusting apologia for racism, then you really need to look in the mirror and re-examine your priorities. Or just do us all a favor and admit that you'll defend any Christian no matter how malignant a position that Christian espouses.

Note #1:
This is certainly not an indictment of Christianity, or most Christians. It is an indictment of this particular Christian idiot. And, lets be honest, it's also an indictment of the useful idiots who fall all over themselves in a knee-jerk reaction to defend this putrid racism ... because context!

Note #2:
In 2014, Duval County renamed Nathan Bedford Forrest High School. Nathan Bedford Forrest, of course, is best known for two acts - serving as the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, and overseeing the Fort Pillow massacre in which hundreds of surrendering Union troops, most of them African-American, were massacred. This, of course, caused a great deal of rage among those who unequivocally thought that founding the Klan and murdering scores of blacks were acts worthy of the honor of a high school name.

And, you have been taught the similarities; i.e. that both were examples of people owning other human beings. There is no way you can justify that by saying "but read it in context."

The context that was meant was place and time. It was clear not to me where this was occurring. If it was a church it in one thing, if it was secular space it is another thing, both racist. The man is a racist for expressing what he did.
If it was in a church then it was being condoned by the church and he definitely would be a christian. That is not the case.
In the school meeting he could be just a racist, with no affliction of any kind other than white supermacist,
Standing up to preserve and honor Robert E Lee so children can daily be reminded of their slaver history.
That is why context matters. Every racist who quotes bible is not a christian. He could be atheist. We dont know.

Against all evidence, the advaita anti-atheist continues her bigoted crusade.

And you refuse to acknowledge that "biblical slavery" INCLUDED chattel slavery, even though the passages have been shown to you many times.

That means you are not ignorant, but willfully are not telling the truth. This NOT a matter of interpretation... the language is clear, unambiguous, and irrefutable. What the heck do you think it means if a slave can be sold?
