where do people go that need the best medicine? australia?
I've never lived in the u.s. so it's an observation not a criticism. No need to take offense.
Whether a similar system would work or not I wouldn't know. It's the attitude that puzzles me.

When taxpayers pay a flat rate, the size of the population is irrelevant.
The biggest obstacle from what I can see, would be the exorbitant cost of medical care in the States

Our system is far from perfect but at least I don't have to make the choice between buying groceries or seeing a Dr.
1.45% is a small price to pay for peace of mind that most of us don't begrudge (except the extremely wealthy that is) That was my point.

I wish I had the luxury to do what I wanted and have others pay for the rainy days. you know that flood story. blame god because you don't work hard and prepare.
I often wonder whether you read the same post I did. In this case you obviously did not: where DID you get the idea that he could not pay for services that WERE given at no charge?

You misread, Arach.

It wasn't that he couldn't afford to pay the bill.

There was no charge.

I'm 66 years old. My wife gave birth to two sons. My wife went through five 30-day treatment centres for addiction before drinking herself to death at 55. My sons were both born with medical/psychological issues, some of which likely related to my wife's drinking while pregnant.

I had a heart attack at 54 and was rushed to a large Toronto hospital because my town's hospital could only keep me stable. Had a stent put in and stayed in a large private room* for three days while receiving all the Good Meds to keep me happy and not missing tobacco.

I've never seen a medical bill in my life.

Such is life in the socialist backwater just north of you folks.

*Totally lucked into the private room. Not the norm.

Spain has chosen to collectively (that means via government) pay for health care, just like they do to build roads or airport terminals. When foreigners visit, they don't charge them to use things that are provided publicly, like roads, airports, and health care.

What's that got to do with unicorns and rainbows?

No-one plans to get sick. Nearly 18 years ago I was diagnosed with a rare 'terminal' illness & spent 6 months in hospital. If I lived in the U.S., I'd still be paying off the bill much less afford quality health care since.

We pay just 1.45% of our income for this privilege which we just take for granted. In all my years I can't remember hearing anyone whinging about the tax or that it's taking one step closer to being a socialist state.
There are structural problems in the USA to where 1.45% would not nearly suffice. You have to keep in mind that our problem is not only that at least some base level of health care is not a right, but a bought privilege; but also, that private, for-profit insurance companies are in the mix, and other vested interests, such that we have a much higher per-capita healthcare cost than in your country right out of the chute. So it's a chicken-or-egg problem, how to cut costs and still provide the services during what would be a fairly large cultural upheaval of a transition.

As I think Winston Churchill said, you can count on the Americans to do the right thing -- after they have exhausted all the wrong things.

Although I'm not sure anymore about the first part of that statement, now that our leadership consists mainly of lying self absorbed sacks of s__t. In fact if I can carve out a bit of time I'm probably attending a lecture and public discussion tonight at a nearby university about how to cope with a government that does not reliably (or often) tell the truth anymore.

I'm afraid that regardless of where one lives or what political party they support, the only guarantee is that our politicians will lie to us on a daily basis.
Not that I think that there's ever been a politician who's never lied to his/her constituents, these days I really don't expect the truth from any politician from a mainstream party.

Politicians are just puppets to those who hold the power, what many are calling the 'shadow government' (The Bilderberg group for one) I don't hold much hope for the future.

Apparently Jesus agrees with the ^ above ^ because Jesus gave a New Commandment found at John 13:34-35.
New because we are to have the same self-sacrificing love for others as Jesus has.
In other words, we are Now to love neighbor MORE than self. MORE than the Golden Rule of Leviticus 19:18

Interesting to say ' puppets to those who hold the power ' because in Scripture Satan is the Puppet Master.
Satan is the behind-the-scenes Puppet Master pulling the strings - 2nd Cor. 4:4; Rev. 12:12,9
The perfect ruler has already been chosen, chosen by God and pleading with us to recognize His choice - Psalm 2:10-12
So, yes, we can expect to see a ramping up of political activity in " who do you support ? "
Jesus is truly qualified to be earth's rightful ruler because he can get to the root cause of man's problems.

It doesn't work when you get varying beliefs and personality types. An evangelical can bring up the fear of hell and the atheist can bring up that therapy may be needed for neurosis. Both are honestly trying to help each other yet neither is going to get very far, and will just generate angst.

There's also the Platinum Rule "Treat others the way they want to be treated." Sounds nice, yet doesn't work well with narcissists and other personality types, especially the fringe.

So if you want to grow and fine tune your moral compass how do you strike a balance? Do you try to emphasize self-awareness, stepping outside one's comfort zone / vacuum, more education? Does learning more about psychology and sociology help? Do you emphasize the need to have complete personal comfort and a certain amount of selfishness before you can help make a difference? Do you work on humility? Do higher morals lead to greater happiness? Or do you simply not care?

I don't feel there's a single right answer, but curious how others feel.

Treat others like family with the definition of family as an extension of yourself. If you haven't realized the beautiful sacred person you are yet, let your family help you find that beauty inside of you. Hugs!
