What if you want to do a RE search based on certain criteria you have in mind, and want to search within a state or region without putting in specific cities or towns? Can this be done and if so, what is the best website?

You could use Zillow, but such a broad search would bring up wayyyy too many properties. Narrowing theareas down by zip codes might give you a better idea. Or, find a website for a large real estate franchise within a particular state, which would give you options to search areas where they have offices located. That may be easier. For the best results though you should use the zip codes. Areas vary too much by price and demographics to beable to get a worthwhile searchin the broad sense.
The deciding factor to me is location, location, location. House type, style, price are of less importance. Like no matter what, I am not going to live in Worcester MA..........LOL
You might also try doing a google-type search instead. For example real estate for sale mountain view. Then you would pull up sites that might specialize in this specific type of property. You just need to select the right keywords, so try different variations on the same, for example waterfront vs ocean vs beachfront.
You can do this on homepath.com. Initially you're going to have to put in a specific city and state. When you get to the results page for that search then you can update it. You will see a blue sidebar that says search and a yellow bar beneath it that says save this search. Thats where you will see the city, state info you entered. Go in there and just put the state. You will now see an update button. Click that and you're all set.
Homepath isn't really representative of the marketplace, as it only includes bankowned properties. In some ateas of the country (believe it or not), they are few and far between.
Zillow and its zestimates are pretty out of whack. Might be a good starting point, but I'd agree that a google search is the way to begin.
Which is what we did when we looked for a place to retire with some very specific criteria.
I just found out how to do this in Trulia this week. You have to start with a city/state then click on the Map view, then check the option "Search inside map" - then, you can zoom out on the map, and everywhere you move the map properties will show up even outside of your starting location. The more you zoom in, the more properties show up (if available).
Redfin if they cover the area you're interested in. You can search across the entire metro area, zoom in on areas on the map (without concern for city boundaries, etc.). In my experience much more accurate information than Zillow.
