Accurately predicting a storm, and it's impact more than 2 days out, is a sucker's bet.
The good news is there are other ways to get a weather forecast that don't involve even turning on the TV or ever watching WRAL. Find other sources and calibrate expectations.

Unfortunately local news is losing viewers, so they breathlessly hype anything they think will get eyeball (though not as badly as the cable "news" shows). NC viewers love the prospect of snow (at least for a couple of days) so they tease us with it obsessively, a week out.
There is also a degree of CYA because if they predict a small amount and then we get a whopper (for us), people scream at them for not giving us warning. Better to go on and have the milk & bread and the generators gassed up and get an inch, than think nothing is coming and get a foot.
