It's absolutely disgusting that we're offering financial incentives for more companies to build here and further drive up the cost of living. We have plenty of jobs for the people who live here. Pay full price without taxpayer handouts or get the hell out.
Like it or not, there is open warfare among states for large employers. The only sure way to stop it is federal legislation, if it's even possible to craft a law that the federal courts would uphold as constitutional. There are "big money" interests in NC who want the state to keep playing the game regardless of the cost, as is the case in most states.
I wonder how the locals feel about this crush of change that’s coming…
Economically, a boon for sure but a new way of life for others.
I have friends with large properties out there. They arent too pleased to say the least. Look at it this way, Moncure is a town of 700 people. The megasite wants to employ 7500 people, its a complete replacement of their way of life. Some properties were recently claimed in Moncure for eminent domain to add to the mega-site, there was outcry of course but that falls on deaf ears. Ill put it this way, newcomers are pleased with the changes while the longstanding locals who live in Chatham for what it is are not. Dang near has me wishing for a great depression to stop it all. Lest thats what my bud out that way is wishing for lol. Most rural people and areas want to stay that way, this only please urbanites who have disdain for rural areas and people.
Wolfspeed will build a new semiconductor plant at a 400-acre site in Chatham County with an estimated investment of $5 billion and a commitment to create more than 1,800 jobs paying $77,000 a year on average. But it’s going to cost North Carolina tax payers some $1 billion in a variety of tax incentives.
Semiconductor chips are a key part of most electrotonic devices used today.
The investment over time stands to be the largest in North Carolina history, exceeding the $4.5 billion commitment by automaker VinFast to build a plant. That investment is also going to Chatham County.
Cue the gentrification complaints by the same people that now celebrate the growth….
