Having never seen a total eclipse (saw a partial one in NYC in the early sixties) I'm eager to see the August event.
Going south from the Chapel Hill area seems like the best strategy -- there are places with totality about 3.5 hours due south, while to catch it in North Carolina one has to go out past Brevard.
I finally found a hotel, which was not easy since I waited too long. But I'd rather not spend the night. How crowded do you think the roads will be with eclipse watchers on the day of? I heard some schools are starting a day late to accommodate eclipse watchers.
Would it be a better strategy to take I95 down, or state roads, or even stick to secondary roads? How much time would you allot for a 3.5 drive in normal traffic?
I was just trying to figure that out, I asked for the day off so I could go somewhere in SC and see it. I'm planning on leaving at 5 or 6 AM and heading down to the Clemson area to go watch it. Hopefully leaving that early will give me some extra time in case traffic gets bad. Probably will just keep an eye on Google Maps to figure out what the best route is as I go. No chance of me getting a hotel room anywhere but luckily I can crash on my friend's couch if I don't make it back that day
We’re still debating plans, and may make it a last minute call based on weather. If we go, it’ll just be a day trip heading toward Columbia or Charleston. I’d think leaving by 7 or 8 AM should give enough time. If things bottle up on the roads, we may bail out to back roads and if it ends up really bad we’ll just get as close as we can to the path of totality when the time comes.
I think the traffic might be worst afterwards. It'll be fairly dispersed with people getting to the path of totailty at different times but everyone might try to leave after.
I booked an airbnb in Charleston back in March. There weren't that many options available even then! I've been planning this for over a year so I'm super excited and already purchased glasses.
I kind-of want to go, but I'd end up in a parking lot in Santee, SC in the rain knowing my luck.
