Future interstate highway names approved | News & Observer

(One of Bruce Siceloff's last stories as a writer for the N&O.)

I-42 will be the upgraded U.S. 70 between Garner and Morehead City. I-87 will be the Raleigh-Norfolk route.

Now that AASHTO are handing out Interstate designations like candy at Halloween, it seems remarkable that NCDOT could not get an I-140 designation applied to US 1 to/from Sanford back in 1999.

That is pretty funny. Though I guess at some point, how many people even realize the rhyme and reason of the assignments anyway or that 50 was specifically avoided as it was in the center of both naming schemes so there was a good chance an interstate 50 would run near highway 50 in many places. If you don't know those things, having them out of order isn't a huge deal I guess.

NC 42 is also close to this area. It intersects with US 70 in Clayton.

So that means we'll be getting two 40/42s an exit apart from each other?

That is a very good point. It is no worse than 70 now as we have Hwy 70, Bus 70, 70 Bypass, Old 70.

Then again, we already have two or three non-continuous 15-501s in the state (a section from Durham to Pittsboro, a section in Sanford, and a section near Southern Pines)

I think 301 crosses 95 a few times as well.

Methinks someone could have been slightly more creative with names.

That's true, but the original numbering system was designed to keep US highways and Interstates with similar numbers apart. I'm not sure they had state roads as much priority. Should have factored into this decision though for sure.

Or I-540, NC540 (toll road), where it's near NC54 and NC55 and regular I-40. Really wished they named 540 something else like 140, 340, 740, or 940

As the forum's newest roadgeek, I like the numbers.

I think they want to maintain the importance of 0s and 5s in the system. One could argue in favor of I-45 in Texas (Dallas to Houston is nationally important, not just regionally), but a route from Garner to Morehead City ending in 0?

I-87 is way out of place as well... but thanks to Pennsylvania's I-99 which is west of I-83, what can you do?

I-540 was supposed to be renumbered as I-640 at some point, but that got scrapped. I hope their reasoning was not "to avoid confusion with US 64..."
