I've never waited more than 20 minutes for customs but I always sit as far forward as possible. Traveling again in a week and a half so I'll update once I get back on how long it takes this time.
Let me add that if you checked a bag on your return flight from Europe, you may find yourself waiting on delivery of the bag to the carousel after you get through the customs queue upstairs. This is particularly likely if you sit in the front of the aircraft or have Global Entry. If you checked a bag, you must get it from the carousel and then go through the final step of the entry process (usually only a short queue). This is true even if you have onward connecting flight.
In other words, Global Entry may let you sit downstairs waiting for your bag instead of standing upstairs in a queue, but you may have to wait regardless.

Hey PDF how have you settled in NYC? Where are you living?
Very good, thank you. Living in Morningside Heights, and I work in Battery Park City, so the commute is good. I did make the mistake of flying out of LaGuardia recently, wow massive traffic with all the construction going on.
