I am looking for a place to stay for a night or 2 within 30-40 minutes from Raleigh. Would like something that has charm preferably in a nice small town. Would be nice if it was near a park, lake and/or river. Thank you for any info.

The Fearrington Inn (near Pittsboro/Chapel Hill) has won many awards, and is a Relais et Chateaux member. It's pricey and gorgeous, but no lake.
The Plantation Inn Resort has a small lake. Its 5 miles north of I-440. Locals may know if it is still operating, but the aerial view shows a shopping center at the intersection of Capital Blvd and I-540.

Thank you for the info. I will look into both of them.
Would also consider campgrounds or cabins
While not an "Inn", the Umstead Hotel in Cary is terrific. It is close to the Umstead State Park, has its' own lake and walking trails and although high-end, is very charming and probably the best hotel in the area.
They have afternoon tea that is popular, an outstanding restaurant (Heron's), a nice bar and the rooms are outstanding. The patio on the back is wonderful with a big fireplace that overlooks the property and there is a spa onsite.
Thank you everyone. I did see that the Plantation Inn was closed and The Fearrington Inn is a little too pricey for what I am looking for. I will look into the Umstead.
Hey, ssd3, I'm still not sure I'm entirely clear on exactly what you're looking for, but I remember somebody I know staying at a place called the Sunset Inn just west of downtown Wendell, NC. Wendell is a little town about 15 or 20 miles east of downtown Raleigh, and it's a very pleasant place with quite a bit of authentic small-town charm, yet close enough to Raleigh to be convenient and semi-suburban. The Sunset Inn seemed like a very nice mom-and-pop inn, and may fit your criteria. I'm not even certain if it's still there, though, and I have no idea what it costs to spend a night or two there. But it seems like it might be worth you looking in to.
If you have an RV, The Birchwood RV Park in Durham looks very nice.
That reminds me of the Gables Motors Lodge in downtown Raleigh. Has anyone ever been inside that place? Whenever I drive by it I imagine stepping inside would transport you to the 1950s.
