in the 1970s maybe that was true when the area was a quarter the size it is now. Its just about impossible to drive down 69 with the windows down without getting your lungs full of junk car exhaust fumes.

In New York they had emissions testing and it was one big pain in the ass. Yet the air quality here is much better than it was back there.

Usually you had to make an appointment. Sometimes you'd have to take off from work. Then on your scheduled day for some reason or the other the machine was down and you'd have to reschedule. This didn't happen all the time but it did happen. When you have two or more vehicles it's that much worse.

Vehicles made before 1996 were exempt from emissions testing but they and all vehicles are required to have an annual safety inspection as well. The fee for the safety inspection is $10 for all vehicles with under a maximum gross weight or 10,001 lbs. the fee for emissions testing is $27.

The safety inspection was a complete joke. There was no way in hell that for $10 a service station could perform all the required checks and make any money. If a car appeared roadworthy, didn't have bald tires or make any unusual sounds or leaks chances are it would never even make it on a lift. They'd just throw a sticker on it.

If you were a regular customer and the owner of the station knew you and your vehicle failed emissions. They might scan the registration and hook up the probe to another vehicle in order for it to pass.

Thank God we don't have them out here.

So true AZgarden, the pollen season is ELEVEN MONTHS out here. In December allergy sufferers get a brief respite, then in Jan-Feb hello juniper, then ragweed (and a horde of other plants) for months on end. The beautiful climate comes with a sneezy wheezy price.

Another useless, unfounded post with no data to back it up.
