No A/C here. Fans is all we have. I can handle the heat but with it not cooling down at night is what is getting me.

Outdoor air quality is not what it used to be, especially with wildfires, so it’s critically important to have control of that air in your home. We have MERV-16 filters and UV filtration with our AC units, so hospital grade air quality in here and it makes a huge difference to anyone with allergies (my wife too, my aunt is very sensitive).

It didn't used to get this hot. And the truly hot days were few and far between. I think that's why most people didn't (and still don't) have ac.

I used to live in the Vegas area myself and was used to having AC. So when I moved to Oregon in 2008 I couldn't understand why so few had air conditioning. Though it was still in the 70s in July back then!

Sadly, a lot of people are wishing they had it now.

I'm so sorry for all the folks who just are not used to the heat. I grew up in Vermont, and back then the rare 95 degree day was positively stifling. Times change.

Aside from the discomfort to humans, what is this heat doing to sensitive plants and animals? The cool rainforests up there are legendary.

Indeed, all we've ever needed was to open the windows and night and use fans to cool off the house, then close everything up tight during the day and the house stayed fairly cool until sundown when it was time to open the windows again.

Admittedly, we do have a little window A/C that we originally got purely for those days when the forest fire smoke is bad. It's certainly been getting a workout these last few days (of course it can't keep up, but it's better than nothing)!

Portland has had some hot summer weather for decades and we all know it. The lack of AC at this point in time is rather foolish. I remember in the late 90's there was a horrible week long heat wave. I was living in Tigard at the time. There wasn't a window AC or fan to buy from Vancouver to Eugene. I know because I traveled to every store and then some. Lines of people trying to find something to buy, and there was absolutely nothing to buy. I ended up with a sinus infection from hell and half dead from the heat. I made damn sure I had window ac's and fans after that. Now its 2021 and these heat waves, smoke from fires are worse than ever. Common sense would tell people to be prepared, because this is going to be every single year. 110 degrees plus in Portland is nothing to take lightly. How many people died from this latest heat wave it was alot more than 2 or 3 people. This song and dance that Oregon and Washington can't get brutal heat is dead on the dance floor.

In November of 1985 I moved from Illinois to the Willamette Valley.

My neighbors told me I wouldn't need an air conditioner in the summer. The “no air conditioner” requirement seemed to be a matter of pride for Oregonians.

The following summer, I tried the “open the windows at night and close them in the morning” routine. After a few days, I went out and bought an air conditioner.

I have AC in my house.

OP: Why not open up a poll to see how many have AC vs those who don't?

Very true. I just don’t understand what could be more important in your house than control of the temperature. It really is a basic first world thing. The house cannot be “haha just whatever nature decides it’s gonna be what you gonna do?!” Well, use 100 year old technology to pretend we live in the first world...? Because it absolutely does get hot, has since I was a kid, this isn’t anything new. We had AC in the bedrooms in our 1920s house growing up, it wasn’t in the rest of the house, and we’d often spend our summer time either outside in the pool or everyone is in their own bedroom because it’s too hot otherwise. Opening windows doesn’t do anything except let poor air quality in and you guys have no shortage of that. The Portland air quality is actively bad, has been for a while, and it’s partially because it used to be so good they let companies pollute the air. Now, it’s a rare day Portland ever has good air quality. Outdoor air belongs outdoors. Indoor air should be purified before it ever comes into contact with you. It’s a basic health thing.

That aside, who are these people and where do you live (the middle of nowhere? Out in the country?) who apparently can sleep with your windows open because there’s never any noise outside?! You can sleep through anything? You don’t have blackout drapes? I just don’t get it. It’s light at 4:40 am in Portland! Windows can’t be open if you have blackout drapes and if you don’t, then you go to bed at 8 pm when it’s also still light outside? I’m baffled. It just doesn’t make any sense. Windows aren’t to be left open, they let in noise, light, and pollution, none of which are good for sleeping.

It gets hot every summer in Portland.

Every summer, it seems to catch people by surprise.
