I happened to look at this list on wikipedia today, take time to read it and notice that school massacre's and or violence by deranged people isn't a recent development, isn't always done with guns, rarely was done with "assault weapons",and has happened alot outside of the U.S.A also, and has been done at times by government, not civilians.
If we were to compile at list of work related murder I bet America wouldn't be the only country to have a list also.
IMHO - It is far better to be able and ready to stop an attack than to pray the assailant will stop on their own. There are always going to be murderous crazies out there and they are going to attack whatever their demons tell them to attack. This is simple observed fact. Many people that blame guns for the damage are simply unwilling to accept that crazy humans are the problem because it is thought to be more difficult if not impossible to stop the humans than to take away the guns.
If we want to minimize the damaged done by these people we have to ready to stop them as a society and as individuals. That means providing some form of separated education for kids like the shooter at Sandy Hook and neighbors looking out for strange behavior like the couple that shot up the bar. In every case sane responsible residents need to be armed in order to fulfill their responsibility to protect each other and themselves from the crazed predators infesting our society.
The biggest killing of school age children in the USA might have been Wounded Knee.
"By the time the battle was over, more than 150 men, women, and children of the Lakota had been killed and 51 were wounded (4 men and 47 women and children, some of whom died later); some estimates placed the number of dead at
300."
