Well stated. They have a presence on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram so why not have a PR department. It would make more sense to call it public affairs. I wouldn't be surprised if that's not what it's actually called. Could the OP provide the name of the school district.

Watch out. If you go complain in person the FBI will put you on a list. If recent reports are true the IRS will too.

Interesting Thread topic - glad to see you are paying attention to one of the most important things in your City/Town — which is the education of our children and the people in charge — the School Board of Trustees.

There is a Nationwide Organization for Public Relations for School Boards.

National School Public Relations Association - Headquarters in Baltimore, MD.

Mission Statement

The Association is dedicated to fostering excellence in the public relations and communications professions and to promoting an understanding of diversity,
equity, inclusion and belonging within our associations, professions and the organizations with which our members work.

Therefore, NSPRA adopts the following goals:

Support members to advocate for and elevate the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in their organizations and communities, including in their hiring practices,
Work to ensure that NSPRA and chapter leadership reflect the diversity of our members,
Actively support equitable opportunities and resources for everyone in our field,
Provide products, services and events that consider accessibility in all of its forms for all members.


That said - they recruit Members, who pay dues - do not appear to be a Union. Therir membership is pretty low considering they are Nationwide. Most States have a central Chapter (Texas does) and the NSPRA dies online training, holds seminars and gives out awards. My school District does not appear to be involved with them - in fact, most of the schools involved appear to be fairly small School Districts.

My School District has 79 Campuses and 56,000+ students. Do they have a Public Relations dept of some sort? Surely they do, it’s a big job to manage 79 Campuses & that many schools. We have a 92% attendance rate & a 3% drop out rate (we have a special campus for them to enter & complete their education, including night classes and babysitting if needed.

I’ve been pretty satisfied, all things considered - big exception on the COVID restrictions that permanently have damaged so many kids. That’s on the Teachers (IMO) — my grandson was told if he left online school and returned to Campus then he would possibly be killing his grandparents and the only way to keep Granny safe was to stay out of school. I don’t have much respect for teachers these days.

Our high school district has a Manager of Public Relations, Communications and Publications. They handle all district wide communications, social media, and publications. They report to the District Supervisor. It's a school district of 9K with 7 high schools, one alternative hs, a "college high" school, one adult school and one charter school.

Someone has to do the job. It makes sense having district communications coming from one source.

Oh, trust me. The meeting is Tuesday. We now have over 2000 signatures on a petition. I am now finding more pieces to the puzzle. In doing research on schools nationwide cutting back on Fine Arts, I am surmising it's due to dwindling metrics in academics due to many factors and they are hiring more instructional teachers and cutting arts and language.

Not language if by that you mean English. Due to NCLB and the follow on initiatives (R3T, ESSA and PARCC) Math and English/Reading have been heavied up on, especially in elementary with some school systems cutting back or eliminating all other subjects including Social Studies and Science.

Back to your original question: it wouldn't be unusual for a larger system with multiple schools at all three levels (the one I taught in had 180+) to have a public relations department.

Some of the reasons were already mentioned, publicity for accomplishments, a clearinghouse for media inquiries, the system officially speaking with one voice. The last thing you'd want is a Principal freelancing a press conference about an issue at his/her school.

Even small systems with only a few schools will have a media relations person in the Superintendent's office. That may be only a small portion of the person's job but it's still there.
